Understanding the New Forest Direct Cremation Process and Guidelines
Understanding the Direct Cremation Process
A direct cremation is a simple and respectful option for families who do not wish to hold a traditional funeral service at the crematorium. Instead, the cremation takes place without family attendance, while all necessary arrangements are handled with care by the New Forest Direct Cremation team. This section explains each stage of the process, from making initial contact and bringing the deceased into care, through to completing paperwork and confirming when the cremation is due to take place. It is designed to give families clear, practical information so they know what to expect and can make arrangements from home with reassurance and support.
Can the family attend the cremation?
New Forest Direct Cremations provides a direct cremation service, which means attendance at the crematorium is not included. Families are told the day the cremation is due to take place, so they can take a quiet moment to reflect if they wish.
What happens after someone dies?
After someone dies, the family can contact New Forest Direct Cremations by phone or through the online contact form. The team will then explain the next steps and guide the family through the arrangements.
How is the deceased collected?
Once the death has been formally verified, the deceased is brought into the care of New Forest Direct Cremations in a private ambulance. Collection is carried out by professional, uniformed staff with dignity and respect.
How long does the process take?
The full direct cremation process can usually take 10 to 21 days, from bringing your loved one into our care until the cremation has taken place, depending on the circumstances. This may vary if paperwork, registration, doctors, hospitals or the coroner are involved. Families can help speed things up by returning documents promptly, providing accurate details and responding quickly to any requests.
Cremation Process: Understanding the Timeline
At New Forest Direct Cremations Ltd, we believe that knowledge about the cremation process can help families navigate their difficult times. Understanding the timescales involved can ease the planning and provide clarity on what to expect during each stage of the process.
Initial Contact
The initial arrangements typically take place within the first few days following a loved one’s passing. During this time, families are advised to contact us to discuss their preferences and requirements. This can often be done through a simple phone call or an in-person meeting, and we aim to guide families with compassion and respect.
Bringing the Deceased Into our Care
Once arrangements are made, we will arrange for the collection of the deceased from the place of death. This usually occurs within twenty-four hours. Following collection, the body is transported to our facilities where it is prepared for cremation. This stage typically takes around one to two days depending on the circumstances.

Paperwork & Arrangements
The actual cremation is scheduled based on availability at the crematorium. The cremation itself usually lasts around two to three hours. However, before the cremation takes place, there are necessary legal formalities that must be completed, which can increase the overall timeframe. Families can expect a detailed communication from our team throughout this process.
Cremation & Returning of Ashes
After the cremation, the ashes are left to cool for several hours before being carefully handled and packaged. Families can generally expect to receive the ashes within five to seven days post-cremation. During this time, we also discuss options for memorial services or the collection of the ashes, ensuring that families have all the support they need in making these decisions.
Paperwork, Ashes & Additional Guidance
In this section we explain the practical details that families may need to understand during the direct cremation process. It covers the paperwork required before the cremation can take place, how the necessary documents are completed and returned, and what options are available for the ashes afterwards. It also provides guidance on situations where the coroner may be involved, helping families understand why the process may take longer and what support is available at each stage.
What paperwork is needed?
New Forest Direct Cremations includes support with the required paperwork as part of the direct cremation package. The family will be sent the Application for Cremation and Particulars of Cremation forms by post, together with a stamped addressed envelope for their return.
New Forest Direct Cremations will also receive the Registrar’s Certificate for Burial or Cremation, often known as the Green Form, which is needed before the cremation can take place.
What happens to the ashes?
Ashes can be scattered in the Crematorium’s Garden of Remembrance without the family being present, offering a simple and peaceful option. Families who would prefer to attend can make arrangements directly with the crematorium for a witnessed scattering or interment. Alternatively, the ashes can be personally delivered to the family by a member of the New Forest Direct Cremations team. This gives families time to decide what feels most appropriate, whether they wish to keep the ashes, scatter them in a meaningful place, or arrange a separate memorial at a later date.
What happens if the coroner is involved?
If the coroner is involved, the cremation may take longer while the necessary checks, investigations and paperwork are completed. This can happen in certain circumstances, such as when the cause of death is unclear or when further information is required before the cremation can proceed. New Forest Direct Cremations will guide the family through what is needed, explain any delays clearly, and keep them informed at each stage. Once the coroner has completed their process and the required documents have been issued, the cremation arrangements can continue.
What support is avaliable to families
The team offers clear guidance and support throughout the whole process by phone and email, allowing families to make the necessary arrangements from the comfort of their own home. They will explain each stage carefully, answer any questions, and make sure the family understands what is needed and when. Their aim is to make the process as simple, respectful and stress-free as possible, while ensuring everything is handled with dignity, care and professionalism from start to finish.
